GSM Group and Maersk, the world's largest container shipping company, have announced a strategic alliance that will transform container shipping operations across 15 African ports. The partnership aims to reduce transit times by up to 30% and introduce digital tracking capabilities for all shipments.
Under the agreement, GSM Group's extensive inland logistics network will be integrated with Maersk's ocean shipping routes, creating a seamless door-to-port-to-door service for importers and exporters across the continent.
The alliance will initially cover ports in Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, and Nigeria, with plans to expand to additional countries by 2027. Both companies will jointly invest in port handling equipment and digital infrastructure.
Key benefits for customers include consolidated billing, real-time cargo visibility, and guaranteed transit time commitments backed by service level agreements. The partnership is expected to handle over 50,000 containers in its first year of operation.
"This alliance combines Maersk's global shipping expertise with our deep understanding of African markets and inland logistics," said the GSM Group Director of Strategic Partnerships. "Together, we can offer an unparalleled service proposition to businesses trading in and out of Africa."
